Doing fieldwork in the North East

Created by Ulrike 6 months ago

Sue and I interviewed parents and children about their micro-businesses in the North East (Riding the Roller Coaster). We set up interviews by phone and then travelled to the families. One afternoon the door was opened by a large, intimidating man, claiming to know nothing about an interview. Sue and I glanced at each other and made quick excuses, about probably the wrong house, and walked away quickly. We were so relieved to be back in my car!

I enjoyed working with Sue, who was also my PhD supervisor. I learnt so much from Sue and am grateful for her encouragement, for example, to engage with complicated software to do research. Though nothing beats Sue's values and empathetic view of all human beings, shining through everything she did.
